  • MicroBits

    Fri 14 Jun 2024

On Tuesday we set my MicroBits to play rock paper scissors shoot.  MicroBits are tiny little computers that you can plug into your computer/pc to programme to do what you want.  Some of our computers suffered an error because it didn’t download properly onto the MicroBits.  So we spotted our mistake and corrected this and then successfully downloaded it.

Once you have programmed it you can unplug it to carry out the investigation.  We programmed it so that when you shake the MicroBit three times it will change from rock, paper or scissors.  An image appears of one of these things so that you know if you are the winner.

It was a fun activity that we would recommend for KS2 to do.

  • RNLI Visit to Year 6

    Fri 14 Jun 2024

Today we were visited by Chris and Andy from the RNLI.  It was Chris' last presentation- he has been visiting schools for it for 14 years. We learnt what the different flags meant at beaches and how to stay safe on the beach.  He told us about some of the rescues that had happened for the lifeboat crew - one was 19 hours long - and they rescue both people and animals.  Our closest lifeboat station is Teddington in London on the River Thames. We learnt that life jackets aren't inflated on land but inflate when you get in the water. We got to try the clothing on and it was big. The clothing is tight to not let any water in.

  • 'Great Play Time' Training

    Wed 12 Jun 2024

All staff had a fantastic time learning what makes a 'Great play time' and the role that loose parts can play in making children's free time good to great, with some brilliant training from Mrs Thomas after school on Wednesday. We are excited to see how our Monks Mindset Heroes enable the children and adults to thrive at play times and lunch times - learning never ends! Here are some photos of us having a great time using the resources on the field. How will your child play with them?

  • Year 2 Visit to Maidenhead Synagogue

Year 2 Visit to the Maidenhead Synagogue

First when we arrived we met Sara who was going to take us round the Synagogue.  We saw the Star of David made of wood which represents the Jewish people who visit there. Then we went inside to the Grand Hall where lots of things happen like celebrations and meals dancing and singing.  Next we went to the Prayer room and saw the eternal light and the ark which was beautiful and made of wood and metal.  Inside the ark we saw the Torah Scroll which can be as long as a football pitch.  The Torah Scroll is like a history book which can take a year to write.  When Jewish people read they read from right to left.  We also saw a Lego model of the second Synagogue in Jerusalem.  We also were able to touch the Yard which is used to touch the Torah Scroll as you can’t touch it with your hands.  After this we had some squash and a cookie.  We loved our morning and it was very interesting.

  • Year 4 Visit to Verulamium

    Tue 04 Jun 2024

On Tuesday 4th June we went to the Verulamium Museum in St Albans.  We got on the coach with our partners, ready for a 45 minute drive to the town of St Albans.  The class started our visit by going up a hill and past an ancient Roman wall to the Hypocaust.  Inside the Hypocaust, there was ruin of an old Roman house but the walls were gone and there was a HUGE hole in the corner.  The floors were beautiful (they were mosaics.)  Then, the class walked across the field next to the Hypocaust and we found the London Gate, the gate that the Romans used to let people in and out of St Albans.  We found London Gate very interesting (or what is left of the gate!)

A few minutes after we got to the London Gate it was snack time so we all walked back done the hill and sat near the playground (on our coats) and had a snack and talked to our friends.

After that we got to play in the playground!  My favourite part was where you cling onto a circle and it spins you round (it was a dizzy 10 minutes!) Next we had our lunch a Whole hour early!  I think it was the pigeons lunch too! (they wanted our food!!!)

Later, we went into the actual museum and did a handling Roman artefacts workshop (Did you know that Romans used a sponge on a stick to wipe their bottoms?!) (I didn't!)

Finally, we did a self guided tour of the museum in our groups ( Did you know that Romans used to through pebbles at their dogs when they stepped on their newly-made bricks?)  Then we got on the coach to go back to school.
