Monks Risborough CE Primary School

Summer 1 Amazing Africa

What are we learning about this half term?

This half term our main topic is entitled 'Amazing Africa' With a focus on geography, we are going to learn all about Kenya.  The highlight of this will be a trip to Whipsnade Zoo to look at all the African animals that live there.

This topic will link to our DT, where we will be making animal hand puppets, which will help us to learn or develop our sewing skills.

In science we will again explore Living Things and their habitats, with a focus on what we can discover in the grounds of Monks Risborough School and a mini safari to look at animals from Kenya.

In mathematics we will begin our journey with fractions.  We will then look at time (a tricky topic, please look at lots of clocks at home!) and consolidate our knowledge surrounding the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In music we will explore the sounds and rhythms of the African drums.

Our RE focus will be consider how Jesus and Christian's shared the good news of the Easter Story, looking at prayer and how this can help us be closer to God.

In English we will have two focus books:

Lila and the Secret of the Rain by David Conway and Jude Daly

The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

Week 1 - Maths capacity, volume & mastering number

Maths - Week 2/3 fractions

English weeks 1 & 2

We have been busy planning our children's stories, which we will be writing next week.  We have worked hard on our handwriting and are beginning to join new words using the Read Write Inc handwriting scheme.  Some children can join the word 'rain' and 'raining.'

We have been learning to understand what a synonym is and looked at different words for 'happy' and 'sad.'

Combining the children's new literacy skills they will be writing their stories next week, inspired by Lila and the Secret of the Rain.

Maths week 3 & 4 - Fractions

English weeks 3 & 4 - we have been really focused!

The children have produced some amazing children's books based on the Lila and the Secret of the Rain story.  They have published them and have read them to Wrens class.  Well done everybody.  I hope you enjoy reading them with your children at home.

Just s few images of our books.
