The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard.
The screening check normally take place during the Summer Term. Please ensure your child is at school during this period. The Year 1 teacher will give out more information nearer the time.
It simply identifies the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that schools can track pupils until they are able to decode.
However, due to COVID-19, Year 2 will be taking the Phonics check the week commencing the 6th December. If the children do not pass this term they can retake the test when the current Year 1 class take the test in the summer term. Information on this will be released by the Year 1 and 2 teacher nearer the time. Your child's teacher will be able to offer you more information on their phonic ability if you ask.
Below you will see some resources that you may find useful - you can share these with your child as we will also be doing this in school to expose them to the test.
