Phonics Screening Check

The Year 1 phonics screening check is a short, light-touch assessment to confirm whether individual pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard.

The screening check normally take place during the Summer Term. Please ensure your child is at school during this period. The Year 1 teacher will give out more information nearer the time.

It simply identifies the children who need extra help so they are given support by their school to improve their reading skills. They will then be able to retake the check so that schools can track pupils until they are able to decode.

If your child did not pass the phonics check in Year 1, they are then permitted to try again in Year 2. If they do not pass it the second time, do not worry as your child will continue to recieve phonics support in the form of interventions in KS2.

Below you will see some resources that you may find useful - you can share these with your child as we will also be doing this in school to expose them to the test.
