Arts Week 2024

The colours of the South Africa flag.

Red - symbolises bloodshed and sacrifices made in the struggle for independence.

White - symbolises peace and harmony between Europeans and Natives.

Green - symbolises the fertility of the land.

Yellow - symbolises the minerals and other natural wealth e.g. diamonds, gold, uranium etc.

Black - symbolises the native people of South Africa.

The flag was designed in March 1994 and adopted for use in April 1994.

Miss Stafford Evans came to visit us and tell us about growing up in Namibia and South Africa. She showed us different types of art work that represented the way of life such as housing. She talked to us about the types of food eaten - South Africans like their meat! Including deer, beef and lamb. Sweet foods are also eaten, which includes a sweet bread dipped in golden syrup! Billtong (dried meat) is also eaten. She explained that the people who live there speak many different languages and dialects.

Miss Stafford-Evans talked to us about the landscape - it is very diverse, which means there are different types of landscapes such as desert, savannahs, forest and mountains. Temperatures in and around South Africa can reach into the mid to high 40s. Very hot!!

We created some art work using the technique of printing. The paint was applied to a printing block using rollers and then transferred to hessian cloth. The colours used represented the South African flag.
