Summer 2 Let it Grow!

What are we learning about this half term?

This half term our main topic is entitled 'Let it Grow!' With a focus on science. We are going to learn all about plants and what they need to grow.  One of the highlights for this term will be planting sunflower seeds, this will hopefully grow over the term and the children will be able to take them home in the summer holidays to grow taller !  Linking this to our science, the children will explore why some of the seeds did not develop as expected.

This topic will link to our Art, where we will be focused on the Dutch painter Vincent van Gough, who painted the iconic picture of a vase of sunflowers.

In mathematics we will be finishing our journey into time, assessing their knowledge looking at 'duration of time.'  We will then look at the importance of statistics in our modern world and how these can be converted to graphs and charts.  This will form part of our STEM week, where we are lucky enough to look at data loggers.  We will conclude the year with some Geometry - position and direction and consolidate our learning from the whole of the Year 2 mathematics curriculum.  Focusing and retrieving our knowledge of the four operations of mathematics (add, subtract, multiplication and division).

In music we will explore our own voices and look at the joy of singing.

Our RE we build on our knowledge of Judaism, revisiting our previous knowledge and exploring what it is like being part of this faith.

In English our focus book will be The boy who grew dragons, by Andy Shepherd.  We will be reading this and exploring the text at a good pace this year.  The class are all now strong readers and gaining inference from more complex chapter books will help them prepared for next academic year.

Linked to our English will be a wonderful DT project.  The children will be able to make a 'dragon's eye' from clay.

In PE we will prepare for Sports Day and look at the importance of working as a team.

Our Class Book this term.

Maths - time and doubling

Time

In our main maths lesson we have been learning to tell the time with an analogue clock.  Any support and help you can give with this at home would be appreciated.

Doubling

In mastering number we have looked at doubling and how this can help us to solves simple equations.  eg 'I know that double 5 is ten so double 5 plus 1 is eleven'

Time

English

We have begun to read the first three chapters of our book. The Boy who Grew Dragons by Andy Shepherd.  The children have looked at how Tomas felt when he discovered a strange fruit in his Grandad's garden.  Carefully, taking that fruit his bedroom to discover its origin, strange things start to happen

We have continued to focus on our handwriting - refreshing our Read Write Inc knowledge about handwriting our letters clearly in the jam.
