Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
On Tuesday 9th June, Year 4 went on a trip to the Verulamium museum where Romans had settled 2,000 years ago. (Alice)
First we walked to the Hypocaust, an underground heat system, covered by a mosaic and owned by a wealthy family or person. They used chimneys underground to force hot air into the floor, making the room warm. (Luca)
Then we went to see what the gateway looked like after the catastrophic fire that ruined the place. We also got to stand on the remaining parts. (Justin)
After our lunch, we handled ancient artefacts in an interesting Roman workshop. The lady who spoke to us was very knowledgeable and where we had our workshop was a very important place for the Romans. (Justin)
Before we went back to school, the whole class got a tour of the museum. We watched a video of how Boudicca destroyed Verulamium and how a keen archaeologist has discovered real things from Roman times! (Alice)
Overall the day was a big success. My favourite bit was probably seeing the ruins of the old gateway. I'd never seen ruins before. It was so cool! (Alice)
On Monday 1st June, Monks Eco Team took part in a mini climate audit, focusing predominantly on the playground and green spaces around the school. This was led by Cindy Grant, from Learning Through Landscapes. The team carried out temperature checks of different surfaces in different areas and found some very surprising results!
The children learnt that our trees are amazing at storing carbon, which can help keep the planet cool (and us during break times!) They also analysed the ground cover at Monks, discussed the importance of green space and began to consider how we can increase wildlife and flora in the school grounds, which will also help to keep us cool at Monks, especially during the summer months.
We are looking forward to further work alongside Learning Through Landscapes, to develop our outdoor spaces!
