We learnt about the artist Alma Thomas as part of our celebration of Black History Month. We learnt that although she had a difficult childhood growing up in a part of America where black people were not treated equally, she persevered and became a teacher of history and art. She had always loved nature and her artwork is always colourful and reflects this. One of her paintings was chosen by an American president to hang in the White House and this made her the first ever black person to have their artwork displayed here. We had a go at creating some Alma Thomas inspired artwork!
